How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 11 = 0.22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.22 ÷ 11 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/11, so part = 2 × 11 ÷ 100 = 0.22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*11. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.22 is the 2% share of 11. The remaining 98% is 10.78, and the two parts add back up to 11.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $11 saves $0.22, so you pay $10.78.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 11 by 2% gives 11.22 and decreasing it by 2% gives 10.78. These do not cancel out: raising 11 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 10.9956, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
