How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 26 = 0.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.52 ÷ 26 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/26, so part = 2 × 26 ÷ 100 = 0.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.52 is the 2% share of 26. The remaining 98% is 25.48, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $26 saves $0.52, so you pay $25.48.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 26 by 2% gives 26.52 and decreasing it by 2% gives 25.48. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 25.9896, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
