How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 43 = 0.86
- Check: Work backwards: 0.86 ÷ 43 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/43, so part = 2 × 43 ÷ 100 = 0.86. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.86 is the 2% share of 43. The remaining 98% is 42.14, and the two parts add back up to 43.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $43 saves $0.86, so you pay $42.14.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 43 by 2% gives 43.86 and decreasing it by 2% gives 42.14. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 42.9828, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 43% of 2. 2% of 43 and 43% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 43 ÷ 100 = 0.86), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
