How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 50 = 1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1 ÷ 50 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/50, so part = 2 × 50 ÷ 100 = 1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1 is the 2% share of 50. The remaining 98% is 49, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $50 saves $1, so you pay $49.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 50 by 2% gives 51 and decreasing it by 2% gives 49. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 49.98, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
