How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 52 = 1.04
- Check: Work backwards: 1.04 ÷ 52 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/52, so part = 2 × 52 ÷ 100 = 1.04. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.04 is the 2% share of 52. The remaining 98% is 50.96, and the two parts add back up to 52.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $52 saves $1.04, so you pay $50.96.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 52 by 2% gives 53.04 and decreasing it by 2% gives 50.96. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 51.9792, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 52% of 2. 2% of 52 and 52% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 52 ÷ 100 = 1.04), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
