How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 30 = 21
  3. Check: Work backwards: 21 ÷ 30 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/30, so part = 70 × 30 ÷ 100 = 21. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

21 is the 70% share of 30. The remaining 30% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $30 saves $21, so you pay $9.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 30 by 70% gives 51 and decreasing it by 70% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 15.3, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
