How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 53 = 1.06
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.06 ÷ 53 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/53, so part = 2 × 53 ÷ 100 = 1.06. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.06 is the 2% share of 53. The remaining 98% is 51.94, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $53 saves $1.06, so you pay $51.94.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 53 by 2% gives 54.06 and decreasing it by 2% gives 51.94. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 52.9788, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
