How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 57 = 1.14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.14 ÷ 57 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/57, so part = 2 × 57 ÷ 100 = 1.14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*57. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.14 is the 2% share of 57. The remaining 98% is 55.86, and the two parts add back up to 57.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $57 saves $1.14, so you pay $55.86.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 57 by 2% gives 58.14 and decreasing it by 2% gives 55.86. These do not cancel out: raising 57 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 56.9772, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
