How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 57 ÷ 100 = 0.57
  2. Multiply: 0.57 × 2 = 1.14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.14 ÷ 2 × 100 = 57%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 57/100 = part/2, so part = 57 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =57%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.14 is the 57% share of 2. The remaining 43% is 0.86, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 57% off an item priced $2 saves $1.14, so you pay $0.86.

Adding and taking away 57%

Increasing 2 by 57% gives 3.14 and decreasing it by 57% gives 0.86. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 57% and then lowering the result by 57% ends at 1.3502, because the second 57% is taken of a bigger number.
