How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 58 = 1.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.16 ÷ 58 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/58, so part = 2 × 58 ÷ 100 = 1.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.16 is the 2% share of 58. The remaining 98% is 56.84, and the two parts add back up to 58.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $58 saves $1.16, so you pay $56.84.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 58 by 2% gives 59.16 and decreasing it by 2% gives 56.84. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 57.9768, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
