How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
  2. Multiply: 0.02 × 69 = 1.38
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.38 ÷ 69 × 100 = 2%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/69, so part = 2 × 69 ÷ 100 = 1.38. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =2%*69. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.38 is the 2% share of 69. The remaining 98% is 67.62, and the two parts add back up to 69.

Discounts: 2% off an item priced $69 saves $1.38, so you pay $67.62.

Adding and taking away 2%

Increasing 69 by 2% gives 70.38 and decreasing it by 2% gives 67.62. These do not cancel out: raising 69 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 68.9724, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.
