How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 69 ÷ 100 = 0.69
- Multiply: 0.69 × 2 = 1.38
- Check: Work backwards: 1.38 ÷ 2 × 100 = 69%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 69/100 = part/2, so part = 69 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.38. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =69%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.38 is the 69% share of 2. The remaining 31% is 0.62, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 69% off an item priced $2 saves $1.38, so you pay $0.62.
Adding and taking away 69%
Increasing 2 by 69% gives 3.38 and decreasing it by 69% gives 0.62. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 69% and then lowering the result by 69% ends at 1.0478, because the second 69% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 69. 69% of 2 and 2% of 69 are always equal (both are 69 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.38), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
