How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 2 ÷ 100 = 0.02
- Multiply: 0.02 × 72 = 1.44
- Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 72 × 100 = 2%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 2/100 = part/72, so part = 2 × 72 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =2%*72. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.44 is the 2% share of 72. The remaining 98% is 70.56, and the two parts add back up to 72.
Discounts: 2% off an item priced $72 saves $1.44, so you pay $70.56.
Adding and taking away 2%
Increasing 72 by 2% gives 73.44 and decreasing it by 2% gives 70.56. These do not cancel out: raising 72 by 2% and then lowering the result by 2% ends at 71.9712, because the second 2% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 72% of 2. 2% of 72 and 72% of 2 are always equal (both are 2 × 72 ÷ 100 = 1.44), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
