How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 72 ÷ 100 = 0.72
- Multiply: 0.72 × 2 = 1.44
- Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 2 × 100 = 72%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 72/100 = part/2, so part = 72 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =72%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.44 is the 72% share of 2. The remaining 28% is 0.56, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 72% off an item priced $2 saves $1.44, so you pay $0.56.
Adding and taking away 72%
Increasing 2 by 72% gives 3.44 and decreasing it by 72% gives 0.56. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 72% and then lowering the result by 72% ends at 0.9632, because the second 72% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 72. 72% of 2 and 2% of 72 are always equal (both are 72 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.44), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
