How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 23 = 4.6
- Check: Work backwards: 4.6 ÷ 23 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/23, so part = 20 × 23 ÷ 100 = 4.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*23. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.6 is the 20% share of 23. The remaining 80% is 18.4, and the two parts add back up to 23.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $23 saves $4.6, so you pay $18.4.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 23 by 20% gives 27.6 and decreasing it by 20% gives 18.4. These do not cancel out: raising 23 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 22.08, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
