How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 20 = 4.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.6 ÷ 20 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/20, so part = 23 × 20 ÷ 100 = 4.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.6 is the 23% share of 20. The remaining 77% is 15.4, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $20 saves $4.6, so you pay $15.4.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 20 by 23% gives 24.6 and decreasing it by 23% gives 15.4. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 18.942, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
