How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 325 = 65
- Check: Work backwards: 65 ÷ 325 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/325, so part = 20 × 325 ÷ 100 = 65. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*325. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
65 is the 20% share of 325. The remaining 80% is 260, and the two parts add back up to 325.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $325 saves $65, so you pay $260.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 325 by 20% gives 390 and decreasing it by 20% gives 260. These do not cancel out: raising 325 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 312, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
