How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 1000 = 800
- Check: Work backwards: 800 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/1000, so part = 80 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 800. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
800 is the 80% share of 1000. The remaining 20% is 200, and the two parts add back up to 1000.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $1,000 saves $800, so you pay $200.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 1000 by 80% gives 1,800 and decreasing it by 80% gives 200. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 360, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 80. 80% of 1000 and 1000% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 800), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
