How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 425 = 85
- Check: Work backwards: 85 ÷ 425 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/425, so part = 20 × 425 ÷ 100 = 85. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*425. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
85 is the 20% share of 425. The remaining 80% is 340, and the two parts add back up to 425.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $425 saves $85, so you pay $340.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 425 by 20% gives 510 and decreasing it by 20% gives 340. These do not cancel out: raising 425 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 408, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
