How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 54 = 10.8
- Check: Work backwards: 10.8 ÷ 54 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/54, so part = 20 × 54 ÷ 100 = 10.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*54. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
10.8 is the 20% share of 54. The remaining 80% is 43.2, and the two parts add back up to 54.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $54 saves $10.8, so you pay $43.2.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 54 by 20% gives 64.8 and decreasing it by 20% gives 43.2. These do not cancel out: raising 54 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 51.84, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
