How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 71 = 14.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.2 ÷ 71 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/71, so part = 20 × 71 ÷ 100 = 14.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*71. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.2 is the 20% share of 71. The remaining 80% is 56.8, and the two parts add back up to 71.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $71 saves $14.2, so you pay $56.8.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 71 by 20% gives 85.2 and decreasing it by 20% gives 56.8. These do not cancel out: raising 71 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 68.16, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.
