How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
- Multiply: 0.21 × 1 = 0.21
- Check: Work backwards: 0.21 ÷ 1 × 100 = 21%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/1, so part = 21 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.21. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =21%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.21 is the 21% share of 1. The remaining 79% is 0.79, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 21% off an item priced $1 saves $0.21, so you pay $0.79.
Adding and taking away 21%
Increasing 1 by 21% gives 1.21 and decreasing it by 21% gives 0.79. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 0.9559, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 21. 21% of 1 and 1% of 21 are always equal (both are 21 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.21), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
