How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
- Multiply: 0.21 × 2 = 0.42
- Check: Work backwards: 0.42 ÷ 2 × 100 = 21%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/2, so part = 21 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.42. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =21%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.42 is the 21% share of 2. The remaining 79% is 1.58, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 21% off an item priced $2 saves $0.42, so you pay $1.58.
Adding and taking away 21%
Increasing 2 by 21% gives 2.42 and decreasing it by 21% gives 1.58. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 1.9118, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 21. 21% of 2 and 2% of 21 are always equal (both are 21 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.42), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
