How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 3 = 0.63
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.63 ÷ 3 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/3, so part = 21 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.63. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.63 is the 21% share of 3. The remaining 79% is 2.37, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $3 saves $0.63, so you pay $2.37.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 3 by 21% gives 3.63 and decreasing it by 21% gives 2.37. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 2.8677, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
