How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 22 ÷ 100 = 0.22
  2. Multiply: 0.22 × 75 = 16.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.5 ÷ 75 × 100 = 22%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/100 = part/75, so part = 22 × 75 ÷ 100 = 16.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.5 is the 22% share of 75. The remaining 78% is 58.5, and the two parts add back up to 75.

Discounts: 22% off an item priced $75 saves $16.5, so you pay $58.5.

Adding and taking away 22%

Increasing 75 by 22% gives 91.5 and decreasing it by 22% gives 58.5. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 22% and then lowering the result by 22% ends at 71.37, because the second 22% is taken of a bigger number.
