How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 24 = 5.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.52 ÷ 24 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/24, so part = 23 × 24 ÷ 100 = 5.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.52 is the 23% share of 24. The remaining 77% is 18.48, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $24 saves $5.52, so you pay $18.48.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 24 by 23% gives 29.52 and decreasing it by 23% gives 18.48. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 22.7304, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
