How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
  2. Multiply: 0.23 × 98 = 22.54
  3. Check: Work backwards: 22.54 ÷ 98 × 100 = 23%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/98, so part = 23 × 98 ÷ 100 = 22.54. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

22.54 is the 23% share of 98. The remaining 77% is 75.46, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 23% off an item priced $98 saves $22.54, so you pay $75.46.

Adding and taking away 23%

Increasing 98 by 23% gives 120.54 and decreasing it by 23% gives 75.46. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 92.8158, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
