How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 50 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 50 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/50, so part = 24 × 50 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 24% share of 50. The remaining 76% is 38, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $50 saves $12, so you pay $38.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 50 by 24% gives 62 and decreasing it by 24% gives 38. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 47.12, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
