How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 24 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 24 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/24, so part = 50 × 24 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 50% share of 24. The remaining 50% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 24.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $24 saves $12, so you pay $12.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 24 by 50% gives 36 and decreasing it by 50% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 18, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 24% of 50. 50% of 24 and 24% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 24 ÷ 100 = 12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
