How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 12 = 3
- Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 12 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/12, so part = 25 × 12 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3 is the 25% share of 12. The remaining 75% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $12 saves $3, so you pay $9.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 12 by 25% gives 15 and decreasing it by 25% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 11.25, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
