How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 25 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 25 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/25, so part = 12 × 25 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 12% share of 25. The remaining 88% is 22, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $25 saves $3, so you pay $22.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 25 by 12% gives 28 and decreasing it by 12% gives 22. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 24.64, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
