How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 16 = 4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 16 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/16, so part = 25 × 16 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4 is the 25% share of 16. The remaining 75% is 12, and the two parts add back up to 16.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $16 saves $4, so you pay $12.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 16 by 25% gives 20 and decreasing it by 25% gives 12. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 15, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 16% of 25. 25% of 16 and 16% of 25 are always equal (both are 25 × 16 ÷ 100 = 4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
