How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 1000 = 400
  3. Check: Work backwards: 400 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/1000, so part = 40 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

400 is the 40% share of 1000. The remaining 60% is 600, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $1,000 saves $400, so you pay $600.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 1000 by 40% gives 1,400 and decreasing it by 40% gives 600. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 840, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 40. 40% of 1000 and 1000% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 400), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
