How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
- Multiply: 0.16 × 25 = 4
- Check: Work backwards: 4 ÷ 25 × 100 = 16%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/25, so part = 16 × 25 ÷ 100 = 4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =16%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4 is the 16% share of 25. The remaining 84% is 21, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 16% off an item priced $25 saves $4, so you pay $21.
Adding and taking away 16%
Increasing 25 by 16% gives 29 and decreasing it by 16% gives 21. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 24.36, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
