How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 18 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 18 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/18, so part = 25 × 18 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 25% share of 18. The remaining 75% is 13.5, and the two parts add back up to 18.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $18 saves $4.5, so you pay $13.5.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 18 by 25% gives 22.5 and decreasing it by 25% gives 13.5. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 16.875, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
