How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 1000 = 150
  3. Check: Work backwards: 150 ÷ 1000 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/1000, so part = 15 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*1000. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

150 is the 15% share of 1000. The remaining 85% is 850, and the two parts add back up to 1000.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $1,000 saves $150, so you pay $850.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 1000 by 15% gives 1,150 and decreasing it by 15% gives 850. These do not cancel out: raising 1000 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 977.5, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1000% of 15. 15% of 1000 and 1000% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 1000 ÷ 100 = 150), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
