How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 25 = 4.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/25, so part = 18 × 25 ÷ 100 = 4.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.5 is the 18% share of 25. The remaining 82% is 20.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $25 saves $4.5, so you pay $20.5.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 25 by 18% gives 29.5 and decreasing it by 18% gives 20.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 24.19, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
