How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 180 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 180 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/180, so part = 25 × 180 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*180. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
45 is the 25% share of 180. The remaining 75% is 135, and the two parts add back up to 180.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $180 saves $45, so you pay $135.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 180 by 25% gives 225 and decreasing it by 25% gives 135. These do not cancel out: raising 180 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 168.75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
