How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 500 = 300
- Check: Work backwards: 300 ÷ 500 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/500, so part = 60 × 500 ÷ 100 = 300. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*500. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
300 is the 60% share of 500. The remaining 40% is 200, and the two parts add back up to 500.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $500 saves $300, so you pay $200.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 500 by 60% gives 800 and decreasing it by 60% gives 200. These do not cancel out: raising 500 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 320, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 500% of 60. 60% of 500 and 500% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 500 ÷ 100 = 300), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
