How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 24 = 6
- Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 24 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/24, so part = 25 × 24 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6 is the 25% share of 24. The remaining 75% is 18, and the two parts add back up to 24.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $24 saves $6, so you pay $18.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 24 by 25% gives 30 and decreasing it by 25% gives 18. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 22.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
