How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 24 ÷ 100 = 0.24
  2. Multiply: 0.24 × 25 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 25 × 100 = 24%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 24/100 = part/25, so part = 24 × 25 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =24%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 24% share of 25. The remaining 76% is 19, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 24% off an item priced $25 saves $6, so you pay $19.

Adding and taking away 24%

Increasing 25 by 24% gives 31 and decreasing it by 24% gives 19. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 24% and then lowering the result by 24% ends at 23.56, because the second 24% is taken of a bigger number.
