How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 240 = 60
- Check: Work backwards: 60 ÷ 240 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/240, so part = 25 × 240 ÷ 100 = 60. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*240. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
60 is the 25% share of 240. The remaining 75% is 180, and the two parts add back up to 240.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $240 saves $60, so you pay $180.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 240 by 25% gives 300 and decreasing it by 25% gives 180. These do not cancel out: raising 240 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 225, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
