How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 26 = 6.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.5 ÷ 26 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/26, so part = 25 × 26 ÷ 100 = 6.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.5 is the 25% share of 26. The remaining 75% is 19.5, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $26 saves $6.5, so you pay $19.5.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 26 by 25% gives 32.5 and decreasing it by 25% gives 19.5. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 24.375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
