How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 33 = 8.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 8.25 ÷ 33 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/33, so part = 25 × 33 ÷ 100 = 8.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*33. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

8.25 is the 25% share of 33. The remaining 75% is 24.75, and the two parts add back up to 33.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $33 saves $8.25, so you pay $24.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 33 by 25% gives 41.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 24.75. These do not cancel out: raising 33 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 30.9375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
