How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 360 = 90
- Check: Work backwards: 90 ÷ 360 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/360, so part = 25 × 360 ÷ 100 = 90. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*360. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
90 is the 25% share of 360. The remaining 75% is 270, and the two parts add back up to 360.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $360 saves $90, so you pay $270.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 360 by 25% gives 450 and decreasing it by 25% gives 270. These do not cancel out: raising 360 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 337.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
