How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 500 = 400
  3. Check: Work backwards: 400 ÷ 500 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/500, so part = 80 × 500 ÷ 100 = 400. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*500. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

400 is the 80% share of 500. The remaining 20% is 100, and the two parts add back up to 500.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $500 saves $400, so you pay $100.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 500 by 80% gives 900 and decreasing it by 80% gives 100. These do not cancel out: raising 500 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 180, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 500% of 80. 80% of 500 and 500% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 500 ÷ 100 = 400), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
