How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 500 = 125
- Check: Work backwards: 125 ÷ 500 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/500, so part = 25 × 500 ÷ 100 = 125. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*500. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
125 is the 25% share of 500. The remaining 75% is 375, and the two parts add back up to 500.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $500 saves $125, so you pay $375.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 500 by 25% gives 625 and decreasing it by 25% gives 375. These do not cancel out: raising 500 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 468.75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
