How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 63 = 15.75
  3. Check: Work backwards: 15.75 ÷ 63 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/63, so part = 25 × 63 ÷ 100 = 15.75. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

15.75 is the 25% share of 63. The remaining 75% is 47.25, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $63 saves $15.75, so you pay $47.25.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 63 by 25% gives 78.75 and decreasing it by 25% gives 47.25. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 59.0625, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
