How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 68 = 17
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17 ÷ 68 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/68, so part = 25 × 68 ÷ 100 = 17. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17 is the 25% share of 68. The remaining 75% is 51, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $68 saves $17, so you pay $51.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 68 by 25% gives 85 and decreasing it by 25% gives 51. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 63.75, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
