How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5
  2. Multiply: 2.5 × 15 = 37.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.5 ÷ 15 × 100 = 250%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 250/100 = part/15, so part = 250 × 15 ÷ 100 = 37.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =250%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

Because 250% is more than 100%, the answer is bigger than 15: it is 2.5 times 15.

Mark-ups: pricing an item at 250% of its $15 cost means selling it for $37.5.

Adding and taking away 250%

Increasing 15 by 250% gives 52.5. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 250% and then lowering the result by 250% ends at -78.75, because the second 250% is taken of a bigger number.
